Since 1st July 2020, British citizens can no longer apply for a residence card as members of the European Union.

A special procedure has been opened for those who arrive in Spain before December 31st 2020, the date on which the transitional period for Brexit ends.

British nationals and their family members residing in Spain in accordance with the conditions established in the Withdrawal Agreement will not be obliged to apply for a new resident status nor, therefore, undergo a new documentation process, but they will have the right to receive a residence document that expressly reflects their status as beneficiary of the Withdrawal Agreement.

I already have a temporary residence permit (green card or green A4 paper) and have not yet reached 5 years of legal residence in Spain

If the UK national already has a temporary residence card, and they have not yet reached five years of legal residence in Spain, they can request the issuance of the new residence document intended for British citizens, which will be valid for 5 years.

I have a residence permit for more than 5 years

If the UK national has already had a green card for more than five years, whether or not the permanent card, they can request the issuance of the new residence document intended for British citizens, which will be valid for 10 years.

If you find yourself in any of the situations described above, you do not have to apply for the new residence document. It is not obligatory. It is only an option.

I don’t have a resident permit yet

If the UK national does not hold a residence card, they can apply for the new residency document intended for British citizens until December 31st 2020, being the requirements the same as those for members of the European Union.

For this, the required documentation must be submitted to the immigration office of the province in which the British citizen resided. The immigration office will examine the documentation and decide on its admission within a period of 3 months. Once residence has been granted, the UK national should request the issuance of the residence document within one month.
